Employment Status Part Time Employment Type Seasonal Job Summary Reporting to the Senior Laboratory Technician, the Laboratory Technician performs duties relevant to the discipline area in the preparation, maintenance and safety of the student laboratory Specific Duties

• Prepare and setup materials and equipment in advance of scheduled labs and attach appropriate safety compliant labels on secondary containers.
• Setup, cleanup, takedown and replenish lab supplies and equipment, including student workstations, as per schedules and requirements.
• Aid in the collection and disposal of biohazardous, toxic and non-hazardous waste.
• Aid in the ordering, receipt, preparation, maintenance, inventory, and storage of supplies, specimen and field collection(s), materials and equipment.
• Monitor and maintain WHMIS/GHS compliance, including labelling of secondary containers.
• Provide supervisory support to the laboratory instructor as needed and as it pertains to student safety and use of materials and equipment.
• Aid in preparation of displays to promote the department.
• Provide technical support in the development of lab procedures.
• Liaise with all campuses and internal departments e.g. Facilities, Purchasing as well as outside agencies, as needed.
• Other related duties as assigned by Senior Laboratory Technician and/or Supervisor.

Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) specializing in Biology or related discipline
• 1 year or more Previous experience in providing support in a student laboratory setting or equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

• Ability to work independently and unsupervised in resolving problems and decision making
• Ability to organize time and workload
• Ability to work against multiple time constraints and deadlines
• Knowledgeable in the safe handling, management and disposal of chemicals
• Knowledgeable in WHMIS/GHS; WHMIS certificate considered an asset
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to multitask
• Ability to work effectively and safely in a potentially hazardous work environment
• Demonstrated ability to be a creative problem solver
• Experience working in a Risk 2 level facility
• Background in variety of Biological fields
• Experience working with Drosophila an asset
• Experience maintaining bacterial and fungal cultures an asset
• Excellent computer skills using MS Suite products, including Excel
• Ability to travel and access to transportation
• Ability to repair and maintain microscopes
• Physical ability to complete demands of the job
