Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Dean (or designate), the Building Sciences Lab Technician provides operational, academic, and technical support to faculty and students across programs such as Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Carpentry & Renovation Techniques, and Surveying. This role supports hands-on learning through lab and fieldwork preparation, equipment management, and student guidance.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Set up and maintain labs for building science programs, including field and shop environments
- Prepare, calibrate, and maintain instruments, equipment, and testing materials
- Support faculty during labs and fieldwork; demonstrate safe and correct procedures to students
- Ensure cleanliness, safety, and organization of lab and shop spaces
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and perform minor maintenance on equipment; support maintenance planning
- Track, order, and maintain inventory of lab materials and supplies
- Maintain documentation, including equipment certifications and records
- Recommend purchase of new or replacement equipment in accordance with policies
- Provide administrative support to the associate dean as needed
Qualifications
- 2-year post-secondary diploma in a related field or Tradesperson Certificate of Qualification (CofQ)
- Minimum 18 months of related experience
- Experience supporting lab, shop, or field-based environments (construction, civil, surveying, or carpentry)
- Knowledge of building science tools, equipment setup, calibration, and maintenance
- Familiarity with health and safety standards, including WHMIS
- Strong organizational, record-keeping, and inventory management skills
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
- Effective communication and ability to support student learning
- Proficiency with basic computer applications
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
