Position Overview

Giffen Consulting Ltd. (Giffen) is looking to hire a Civil Engineer with a mining and/or heavy industrial background to join our growing team. We are looking for an individual to join us on a full-time basis in our Vancouver or Toronto office. This is a hybrid work arrangement with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office.

Key Responsibilities

Earthworks Engineering & Technical Leadership

  • Lead engineering and design for major earthworks scopes, including:
    • Site grading and overall site development
    • Earthworks for process plants, haul roads, laydown areas, and site pads
    • Excavation, embankments, slopes, berms, and cut/fill optimization
    • Surface water management for earthworks areas (ditches, channels, culverts, ponds)
  • Develop and review earthworks design criteria, standards, and QA/QC practices.
  • Conduct advanced engineering calculations, including runoff, drainage routing, slope stability coordination (with geotechnical consultants), and cut/fill analysis.
  • Oversee development of 3D civil models, grading plans, and construction‑ready earthworks packages.
Project Delivery & Management

  • Own all civil earthworks scopes across multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Prepare and manage discipline budgets, schedules, estimates, and work plans.
  • Provide senior-level review of design deliverables, drawings, and calculations.
  • Support construction with field reviews, RFI responses, and design clarifications.

Client, Stakeholder & Rightsholder Engagement

  • Act as the primary earthworks technical contact for owners and project partners.
  • Build and maintain strong long-term relationships with clients.
  • Support proposal development, fee estimates, and business development activities.

Team Support & Mentorship

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to intermediate and junior engineers.
  • Support internal development of design standards, templates, and workflows.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and practical problem‑solving.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare and lead technical reports, design briefs, specifications, and review documents.
  • Ensure all earthworks engineering aligns with EGBC requirements and industry best practices.

Qualifications + Experience

  • Degree in Engineering with Civil/Structural focus from an accredited university.
  • Registered (or eligible to) as a P.Eng. with EGBC.
  • 7+ years progressive experience as a Civil Engineer on mining and or heavy industrial projects.
  • Civil3D Experience.
  • Familiar with greenfield and brownfield mining projects in both open-pit and underground mine design.
  • Excellent organizational, technical, communication and computer skills.
  • Adaptable and innovative with a love of learning and drive to constantly improve.
  • Well-developed organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple ongoing projects.
