Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS) is seeking a .6 of a FTE, Elementary Counsellor, for a temporary contract commencing September 1, 2026, through until June 30, 2027.
Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS) covers a large geographical area and resides within the traditional territories of the Snuneymuxw, Snaw-naw-as and Stz’uminus First Nations. This opportunity is a zone position and will initially be assigned to , with the location being subject to change, based on operational needs.
Position Summary:
Elementary Counsellors with NLPS provide a continuum of preventative, developmental, remedial, and intervention services as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Working within the District’s Response to Intervention (RTI) framework, the Elementary Counsellors facilitate the educational, personal, social, emotional and career development, of students in schools within tier 1.
The elementary counsellor works in collaboration with the School-Based Team (S-BT), district Learning Support Services Team (LSST), staff and community agencies to assist in the development of support systems for students and classrooms. Services of the elementary counsellor are focused within the classroom environment (tier 1).
This challenging role includes minimal direct counselling of students and is primarily focused on school- based consultation services, coordination and delivery of prevention programs.
Key Responsibilities:
The elementary counsellor provides a coordinated and integrated set of support services that includes:
- participating as an active member of the school-based team (S-BT) and Learning Services Support Team (LSST).
- providing individual, group and family counselling and intervention services during times of crisis with the focus on connecting the student and family to community resources/services as appropriate.
- being able to work within a flexible school schedule while responding to district priorities as per the LSST.
- reporting and/or assisting with reports to the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
- providing leadership in the identification, placement and programming for students with complex mental health and behavioural challenges.
- developing, coordinating and providing leadership in the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs), and/or Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBAs) for those students who require moderate and intensive behaviour support.
- teaching, co-teaching and/or supporting the delivery of prevention, social responsibility and social skills curriculum/programs (e.g. Focus on Bullying, FRIENDS, Steps to Respect etc.).
- providing liaison between school, home and community agencies, and facilitating referrals for service(s).
- providing updated information to school staff about Child Abuse Prevention and Suicide Protocol on an annual basis.
- participating in the transition planning process for students.
Required Education and Experience:
- Professional Certification through the BC Teacher Regulation Branch or evidence of active registration in progress.
- A Master's degree in school counseling and/or counseling psychology.
- Two years successful elementary classroom teaching experience and/or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain skills through professional learning.
- Demonstrated proficiency to work with colleagues and students in knowledge producing and knowledge sharing.

Salary: $62,657 - $113,004 per annum
Location: Bayview Elementary School, subject to change based on operational needs
