HOURS OF WORK: Primarily Wednesdays from 4:00PM to 10:30PM, and Saturdays & Sundays from 4:00PM to 8:30PM. Hours are variable, as needed to support operational requirements

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Manager of Recreation, the Facility Security Host is responsible for working alone or in pairs to monitor the safety and security of WSPR premises including assets, patrons, and personnel during evenings, weekends, and program times when youth are using the facilities.

In addition to great wages, employees receive access to counselling, and a staff facility pass which provides drop-in use of the weight room, fitness classes, skating, the pool and our 9-hole golf course.

Job Duties and Accountabilities

  • Mostly on foot or by van, patrols the exterior and interiors of WSPR facilities to ensure the personal safety of safety and security of the WSPR premises including assets, patrons, and personnel.
  • Ensures WSPR policies, procedures and Patron Code of Conduct are adhered to and will provide intervention as required.
  • Approaches potentially difficult situations or patrons with another staff member as per “Dealing with Difficult Patron Policy.”
  • Continually checks doors to ensure they are closed and locked as required.
  • Responds to onsite situations in accordance with organizational policies and procedures, including enforcing property rules, managing crowd control and lineups, and addressing prohibited behaviors or unauthorized access.
  • Refuse entrance of patrons to the facility or escort patrons off-site.
  • Contacts staff, police, or other authorities for emergency situations.
  • Reports all incidents, problems, and areas of concern to the supervisor through communication book entries and completion of major incident reports.
  • Provides basic first aid response to patrons.
  • May initiate or support other facility staff in emergency situations, responsible for the evacuation of public from buildings and dangerous areas.
  • Must be familiar with buildings and emergency evacuation plans and procedures.
  • Assist with night closure of Pool, Weightroom and Reception areas. Follows end of night closing procedures to ensure safe closing of the pool, weightroom and changerooms; ensures all patrons have vacated the JDF Reception lobby upon closing at night.
  • Performs additional duties of similar scope and complexity as required.

Qualifications

  • Current and valid Basic Security Training License recognized by the Justice Institute of BC is required.
  • Emergency First Aid with CPR C/AED certificate is required.
  • Class 5 BC Driver’s license is required.
  • Experience working with youth in a community setting and knowledge/awareness of at-risk populations and diverse cultures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of youth services, community resources and opportunities for youth.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills to ensure a positive work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability in dealing with difficult people and situations in a diplomatic, tactful manner.
  • Ability to remain calm, use sound judgment skills and demonstrate strong leadership skills during emergency situations.
  • Must be physically fit and able to walk or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be willing to work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to create positive public relations at large community events and gatherings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work co-operatively in a team environment as well as to work independently.
  • Previous experience as a security guard would be an asset to this position.
