Emil Anderson Maintenance (EAM) is the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MoTT) highway and bridge maintenance contractor for three service areas in British Columbia: Service Area 7 (Fraser Valley), Service Area 20 (Robson), and Service Area 26 (Skeena).

For decades, EAM has delivered reliable road and bridge maintenance across urban and rural corridors. Our teams perform the full scope of highway maintenance activities, including vegetation control, drainage, sign and pavement repairs, concrete and wood bridge repair, gravel surface grading, anti icing, snow plowing, and incident and emergency response. Based out of regional offices and yards, our skilled year round workforce scales up during winter operations to meet seasonal demands and maintain prescribed response times on numbered routes.

The Opportunity  

We’re seeking a Ferry Operator for Service Area 26 (Skeena). Based in Usk, the ferry runs across the Skeena River—about 16 km northeast of Terrace, 0.8 km off Highway 16—between South and North Usk.

As a Ferry Operator you’ll operate and maintain a reaction and/or aerial ferry. A reaction ferry is a cable ferry that uses the current of the river against a fixed tether to propel the vessel across the water. If you enjoy working outdoors and take pride in essential community service this role is for you.

Although we are a union affiliated organization, being an active member is not a prerequisite.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Safely operate the ferry across the Skeena River, ensuring timely crossings and adherence to schedules
• Conduct daily inspections of ferry equipment, cables, safety gear, and mechanical components
• Perform routine and minor maintenance to keep the ferry operational and safe
• Maintain logbooks and records of operations, maintenance, and any safety incidents
• Monitor river and weather conditions; adjust operations as needed for safety and compliance
• Assist passengers—providing courteous service and ensuring boarding/unloading procedures are followed safely
• Communicate regularly with supervisors—reporting on operations, maintenance issues, safety concerns, and any unexpected events
• Coordinate with supervisors for major repairs, emergency responses, and operational support
• Follow all safety, environmental, and MoTT regulatory requirements
  
  

Your Qualifications & Skills

• Working safely is a condition of employment.
• Willing to work shifts, including weekends.
• Valid Canadian driver’s license with a clean abstract.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Understand this position can be physically demanding and labour-intensive.
• Willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Good knowledge of small boat operation and maintenance.
• Familiarity with river conditions and physical characteristics.
• Mechanical aptitude and comfort operating various types of equipment.
• Skilled in public interactions—friendly, courteous, and tactful.
• Physically fit.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Marine Emergency Duties (MED) A2 certificate.
• Pleasure Craft Operator’s License.
• Industrial First Aid Level 1.
