Organizational Information

Purpose of your Position - Non Union
Classification Summary - Union A Groundsperson II performs horticultural and maintenance functions in the operation of City parks, gardens, sportsfields, the nursery facilities and other green spaces. The work involves a variety of disciplines including turf grass management, irrigation systems, horticultural propagation, pest management and arboriculture.

Duties - Union
  • Constructs, prepares, lays out and installs new planting areas and irrigation systems; tests, maintains, repairs and winterizes irrigation systems.
  • Plants flowers and trees; mows turf areas; waters, weeds, fertilizes and applies pesticides and herbicides to various planted areas; prunes trees and shrubs; and performs related horticultural duties.
  • Operates various parks maintenance equipment and machinery (e.g. tractors, edgers, weed trimmers, pruners, chain saws, etc.), vehicles, irrigation systems, and a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Performs routine maintenance, minor repairs and lubrication of equipment.
  • Picks up and disposes of debris and litter. May be required to handle hazardous waste (e.g. found used needles).
  • Performs snow and ice control duties.
  • Receives and responds to service request from staff, contractors and the public.
  • Maintains various written records (e.g. activity reports, vandalism reports, etc.)
  • May provide “crew -leader” direction and instruction to helpers (typically less experienced staff and students) on specific job requirements, equipment operation and safety procedures.
  • Manual labour is required.
