As an Intermediate Aquatic Biologist, you’ll play a key role in shaping projects that protect freshwater ecosystems while enabling sustainable development across the Canadian Prairies and Northern regions.
Based in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, or Saskatoon, this role blends meaningful fieldwork in dynamic outdoor environments with technical and professional growth in the office.
You’ll contribute to high‑impact projects across transportation, energy, mining, infrastructure, and resource development - working alongside multidisciplinary teams, clients, and regulators to deliver science‑based solutions that matter.

Compensation
AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $39.00 - $52.40
MB & ON: $35.60 - $49.70
NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $35.20 - $47.50

As an Intermediate Aquatic Biologist, you’ll play a key role in shaping projects that protect freshwater ecosystems while enabling sustainable development across the Canadian Prairies and Northern regions.
Based in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, or Saskatoon, this role blends meaningful fieldwork in dynamic outdoor environments with technical and professional growth in the office.
You’ll contribute to high‑impact projects across transportation, energy, mining, infrastructure, and resource development - working alongside multidisciplinary teams, clients, and regulators to deliver science‑based solutions that matter.
Your Impact
- Lead and support aquatic field programs including fish and fish habitat assessments, baseline studies, environmental monitoring, and fish salvage activities.
- Take ownership of field execution, including planning logistics and implementing site‑specific health and safety plans.
- Work independently or lead small field teams across projects in rail, power, mining, oil and gas, pipelines, and infrastructure.
- Collect, manage, and interpret aquatic and water quality data to support sound environmental decisions.
- Contribute to technical reports, regulatory permitting, and proposal development.
- Collaborate with clients, regulators, and internal teams to deliver high‑quality, defensible work.
- Apply best practices and regulatory requirements while upholding WSP’s professional and safety standards.
- A B.Sc. with 5+ years of freshwater aquatic field leadership experience, or an M.Sc. with 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Hands‑on experience with fish and fish habitat sampling methods such as electrofishing, gill netting, and trapping.
- Comfort working on or near water and the ability to identify small‑ and large‑bodied fish species in the Prairies and/or Northern Canada.
- Experience working in remote and challenging outdoor environments, with flexibility to travel.
- Working knowledge of standard field sampling methods, GPS units, and water quality meters.
- Experience operating boats and off‑road vehicles (ATVs, snowmobiles, Argos); PCOC and electrofishing certification are strong assets.
- A proactive, safety‑first mindset and the ability to troubleshoot equipment in the field.
- A valid driver’s licence, access to a personal vehicle, and proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
