Position Summary
The Machine Operator safely operates specialized machinery for railroad track construction or repair. Drives company vehicles and operates any heavy equipment needed for specified tasks designated by the Roadmaster. Performs other track maintenance related tasks as needed.

The Machine Operator safely operates specialized machinery for railroad track construction or repair. Drives company vehicles and operates any heavy equipment needed for specified tasks designated by the Roadmaster. Performs other track maintenance related tasks as needed.

Essential Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operation and Transport Canada (TC)
- Work safely in a construction field environment following safety rules; carry out work in manner that promotes safe work environment
- Drive company vehicles including, but not limited to: Backhoe, Grapple Truck, Boom Truck and Tamper
- Considered an expert in operating all CDL equipment, and handles all advanced operating duties
- Raise rail: use track jack to facilitate removal and installation of railroad ties
- Drill holes through rails for insertion of bolts: operate power drill
- Operate track-wrench machine to tighten or loosen bolts at rail joints
- Operate rail saw to cut rails to specified length
- Operate spike pullers, spike drivers to perform construction and maintenance tasks associated with railroad tracks
- Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
- Wear required protective equipment (PPE) such as: hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, safety glasses etc.
- Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime and various shift work

- High School Diploma/GED
- 1 year of track maintenance experience
- 1 year of heavy equipment operation to include: Backhoe, Grapple Truck, Boom Truck and Tamper
- Operate hand tools, including: wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, etc.
- Operate power tools and hydraulic equipment, including: portable grinders, rail saws, spike pullers, track wrench machines, power drills
- Apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions
- Perform concepts of basic shop math, calculate figures and amounts such as: area, circumference, length, distance, and volume
- Write legible to complete routine reports, and complete required testing
- Effectively communicate with all level of employees and business associates in a clear, concise and professional manner
- Read, comprehend and comply with published rules, procedures and manuals, inspection checklists, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information
- Familiar with Roadway Worker’s Protection (RWP)
- Demonstrate problem solving and troubleshooting skills resulting in effective resolution
- Basic computer skills
- Professional integrity and accountability
- Work in fast-paced collaborative environment
- Valid Driver’s License - CDL (or attain one within 90 days); pass medical certification and Drivers Qualification File, pass Drug & Alcohol testing
- Roadway Worker Protection Qualified
- Previous experience in Rail Transportation, Supply Chain Logistics, Manufacturing and/or Oil & Gas industries
- Qualify in Track Inspection as required by Transport Canada
- Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or windy conditions caused by the weather including: snow, rain, heat and sub-freezing temps
- Daily travel as business requires during scheduled work hours
