We are looking for an experienced Network Service Engineer with strong expertise in customer network service configuration to support the design, implementation, and optimization of network services. In this role, you will contribute to the scalability, reliability, and performance of network infrastructure while ensuring that service designs align with business goals and customer requirements.
On site 4 days a week in Ottawa
The Network Service Engineer will work closely with Commercial, Product, Sales Engineering, Customers, Network Engineering, and external contractor teams to provide technical guidance on network configurations, documentation, use cases, test cases, and service design improvements. This role acts as a Subject Matter Expert for network services and configurations within the service portfolio, helping ensure that implementation decisions, validation plans, and documentation meet program objectives.

Key Responsibilities
Network Design and Implementation
- Design and support Layer 2 and Layer 3 routing and switching solutions to improve traffic engineering and optimize network resource usage.
- Work with cross-functional teams to understand business needs and translate them into practical network solution designs.
- Develop strategies to help partner business units implement and manage network service architectures.
- Represent Network Engineering in the review of product change requests by assessing technical feasibility, documenting findings, and communicating potential impacts.
- Support the planning and evolution of customer network architecture, with a specific focus on Layer 2 transparent networking.
- Identify opportunities to improve network performance and optimize customer data network services.
- Perform network assessments and recommend improvements to support network health, operational efficiency, and SLO/SLA reporting.
- Build and validate proposed network architectures in a lab environment, including documentation of test cases and performance metrics.
- Document and communicate network requirements to hardware and software development teams, particularly for customer-facing MEF 3.0 interfaces and networking design requirements for data processing equipment.
- Participate in internal and external design and system engineering reviews, contributing materials related to Network Engineering activities.
- Maintain strong knowledge of industry protocols and standards, including IPv4, IPv6, IS-IS, BGP, segment routing, and MPLS.
- Stay current on emerging segment routing technologies and apply relevant advancements to improve network capabilities.
- Serve as a technical expert for complex network troubleshooting and incident resolution.
- Partner with Operations teams to diagnose and resolve network issues quickly, helping minimize service interruptions.
- Assess new networking hardware, software, and solutions that support network strategy and growth plans.
- Work with vendors to understand product roadmaps and provide feedback on feature improvements.
- Create and maintain technical and training documentation, including network diagrams, configuration guides, and troubleshooting procedures for Product, Sales, and Sales Engineering teams.
- Prepare and deliver presentations, reference materials, and test strategies for network equipment, application deployment, and operations.
- Share knowledge with team members and mentor technical and customer-facing resources.
- Work with Network Engineers to develop and oversee product investigations, proofs of concept, service validation activities, and lab-based product demonstrations.
- 10+ years of experience in carrier and customer network design, operations, deployment, and support.
- Broad experience or exposure across network product design, development, verification, deployment, and support.
- Understanding of Metro Ethernet Forum standards and objectives as they relate to Carrier Ethernet Services.
- Strong knowledge of routing and switching protocols, including IPv4, IPv6, BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, and MPLS.
- Hands-on experience with network test devices and reporting tools such as Ixia and Spirent.
- Experience with network automation and scripting using Python, Ansible, or similar tools.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex network issues.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, including mentoring engineers and customer-facing resources.
- Strong understanding of security principles and practices related to network architecture.
- Proven experience in network design, architecture, and optimization.
- Professional certifications from Cisco, Juniper, Ciena, or equivalent are highly desirable.
- Comfortable leading meetings and communicating technical issues, risks, and trends to senior management and other stakeholders at the appropriate level of detail.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- Proven ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams and organizational boundaries to achieve shared goals.
