Personal Support Worker - North Bay, ON - CAD$100.00/week
Description
About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 90-year-old gentleman living independently in his apartment in North Bay. He uses a walker and cane for mobility and values his independence. He recently had a medical procedure (growth removal behind his ear) and needs regular wellness monitoring. He experiences some cognitive decline and can become anxious with unfamiliar people or changes to his environment. Previous experience with rotating caregivers caused significant distress, including paranoia about theft and discomfort with people moving his belongings. Building a trusting, consistent relationship is absolutely essential to his comfort and wellbeing.
Responsibilities:
Initially, visits will focus on wellness checks and light support. Check on healing progress from recent medical procedure and monitor for any concerning changes. Take out garbage and handle light tidying without moving or reorganizing his belongings. Conduct food safety checks to ensure nothing is spoiling on counters or in the refrigerator. Prepare simple meals or reheat prepared food. Provide gentle memory prompts and redirection when needed. Accompany him to appointments or errands like the farmer's market occasionally. As his needs evolve, responsibilities may expand to include more meal preparation, medication reminders, and assistance with daily activities. The caregiver should be prepared to grow with the family's needs over time.
What We're Looking For:
A patient, calm caregiver who excels at building trust with anxious or fearful clients. Experience supporting seniors with cognitive changes, particularly those who experience paranoia or anxiety. Comfortable working with clients who use walkers or wheelchairs. Strong communication skills to keep family informed of observations and concerns. Reliable and consistent presence—showing up at the same times creates the predictability he needs. Respectful of his independence and personal space, especially regarding his belongings. Valid driver's license for occasional transportation. English speaking. Someone who can start slowly and build rapport before expanding care tasks.
Schedule:
Minimum 6 hours per week, with flexibility on specific days and times. Preferred structure is either 2-hour visits three times weekly or 3-hour visits twice weekly. Family is open to adjusting days based on caregiver availability (for example, Tuesday/Thursday instead of Monday/Wednesday). Consistency in timing and days is more important than specific time slots. This is a long-term position with expectation that hours will increase as care needs grow.
