Job Title: Structural Designer / Checker
Job Description
The Structural Designer / Checker reviews and verifies the technical accuracy, completeness, and quality of structural design deliverables for process modules, equipment supports, pipe racks, skids, and related structures. This role focuses on checking 3D models, 2D drawings, material take-offs, and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry codes, internal standards, and client requirements. The position collaborates closely with structural designers, engineers, technical leads, and project managers to resolve design discrepancies, enhance drawing quality, and support effective interdisciplinary coordination. The Structural Designer / Checker provides technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and checkers, maintains robust quality assurance standards, and evaluates constructability, consistency, and adherence to established engineering principles throughout the design process.

This role operates in a fully in-office environment, providing close collaboration with structural designers, engineers, and CAD support teams. The position uses digital tools and structured file systems, including CADWorx and related software, to review and manage 3D models, 2D drawings, and associated documentation. The work setting emphasizes a challenging yet rewarding atmosphere where individuals can grow, learn, and take on increasing responsibilities over time. Performance expectations include rigorous review processes, with a focus on technical skill, knowledge, high-quality deliverables, and effective teamwork and collaboration.

Responsibilities
- Review and verify the technical accuracy, completeness, and quality of structural design deliverables, including 3D models, 2D drawings, and material take-offs.
- Check structural designs for process modules, equipment supports, pipe racks, skids, and other related structures to ensure compliance with project specifications and client requirements.
- Ensure all structural deliverables comply with relevant industry codes and standards, including recent structural, welding, and safety codes.
- Evaluate constructability, consistency, and adherence to established engineering principles in all assigned design packages.
- Identify, document, and resolve design discrepancies by working closely with structural designers, engineers, technical leads, and project managers.
- Provide clear, constructive comments and recommendations for design improvements and drawing acceptance decisions.
- Prioritize checking activities to support project schedules and the successful delivery of project milestones.
- Support interdisciplinary coordination by reviewing interfaces with other disciplines and ensuring alignment of structural deliverables.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior designers and checkers, promoting best practices in structural drafting and design.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of drawing quality, checking processes, and internal standards.
- Participate in on-the-job training related to project-specific file structures, digital workflows, and CAD support processes.
- Utilize CADWorx and related design tools to review, interpret, and validate structural models and drawings.
- Support performance expectations by consistently producing high-quality reviews, troubleshooting issues, and contributing to problem-solving at various project stages.
- Collaborate effectively within a team environment, demonstrating strong communication and coordination skills.
- Minimum 10 years of structural checking experience.
- Extensive experience in the oil and gas industry.
- Strong knowledge of recent structural codes and standards, including welding codes and structural codes.
- Familiarity with CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) codes.
- Familiarity with OSHA standards and other relevant safety regulations.
- Proficiency in structural drafting and design practices for process modules, equipment supports, pipe racks, skids, and related structures.
- Ability to review and verify 3D models, 2D drawings, and material take-offs for technical accuracy and completeness.
- Proficiency with CADWorx for reviewing and checking structural models and drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify design discrepancies and inconsistencies.
- Ability to evaluate constructability and adherence to established engineering principles.
- Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to troubleshoot issues at various stages of the design process.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with designers, engineers, technical leads, and project managers.
- Ability to provide clear, constructive feedback and make informed decisions regarding drawing acceptance and design improvements.
- Fabrication experience in a shop or field construction environment.
- Experience with steam generation projects or systems.
- Experience coding and detailing connections such as one beam into another in accordance with relevant structural and welding codes.
- Experience working on challenging and complex projects with a focus on continuous learning and professional growth.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide junior designers and checkers.
- Experience working within structured digital processes and file management systems.
- Track record of contributing positively to a collaborative team environment and performance-focused culture.
