Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the effective supervision and organization of one or more institutional food services operations
  • Supervises, motivates and trains assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, continuous learning and encourages innovation in others. Follows all City of Toronto staff policies
  • Supervises the day-to-day operation of all assigned staff including the scheduling, assigning and reviewing of work. Authorizes and coordinates vacation and overtime requests.
  • Monitors and evaluates staff performance. Hears grievances, consults with labour relations and with Manager Food & Nutritional Services and proceeds with disciplinary action when necessary
  • Monitors program operations to ensure all services meet client needs and are provided in accordance with Divisional policies, procedures and applicable legislation and recommends changes to improve operational performance
  • Participates on committees/workgroups with internal/external stakeholders to review/enhance programming and services to clients. Assisting in the preparation of effective communication strategies for internal/external audiences
  • Facilitates staff meetings and training
  • Plans, develops and co-ordinates with appropriate management staff, special catering events for homeless residents within the community, such as BBQ’s, holiday functions and emergency planning meetings
  • Provides input into and administers assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations as it relates to food services program. Monitors and controls spending on all purchase orders and contracts that are required for operations and authorizes contract release orders as needed
  • Maintains records and prepares operating reports as required
  • Supervises the safe, nutritious, cost-effective preparation and service delivery of food
  • Plans menus following Canada's food Guide, prepares & places orders for food, cleaning supplies, paper goods, etc.
  • Plans menus according to special dietary requirements; provides a diverse menu reflecting the diversity of the client population; Monitors and controls food service operations inventories, incoming stock and delivery receipts
  • Consults with appropriate staff and residents to determine any special dietary or nutritional needs and ensures that collective/individual nutritional needs are met according to Canada’s Food Guide and other legislated guidelines
  • Ensures the maintenance of proper sanitary conditions of kitchen and dining room areas
  • Arranges service calls with contracted companies for repair and continued preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Ensures food production/service areas are safe and in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety Guidelines
  • Ensures that sanitary conditions are maintained in kitchen/food service areas, according to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and other legislated food safety protocols
  • Complies with all requirements of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and City of Toronto policies regarding workplace accidents
  • Maintains security of the workplace by locking and checking equipment is turned off/stored appropriately
  • Liaises with clients, health care workers, counsellors and Shift Leaders in all programs, to sustain client centred service
  • Works shifts and weekends to provide supervisory coverage

Key Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Food and Nutrition or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Considerable experience in the operation of an institutional food service within depth knowledge of quantity food preparation and service, including experience in menu planning.
  • Experience providing leadership to staff in a professional/institutional food service environment, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Valid registration with the College of Dieticians of Ontario is considered an asset.
  • Eligibility for membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management is an asset.
  • Ability to effectively manage complex or challenging client issues, involving vulnerable populations within community settings.
  • Knowledge of holistic nutrition and therapeutic diets.
  • Knowledge of food service management, methods, materials and equipment employed in large scale food preparation and serving.
  • Knowledge of sanitary standards for food service areas and personnel.
  • Excellent and effective oral & written communication skills at a supervisory level.
  • Ability to problem-solve day to day food service work related matters.
  • Ability to deal with emergency situations in a practical and efficient manner.
  • Ability to provide and display excellent customer service when working with clients, service providers, the general public and/or staff in relation to incoming service inquiries, requests and/or complaints.
  • Working knowledge of collective agreements, government legislation in the areas of food handling and sanitation, employment, occupational health and safety and human rights.
  • Ability to manage labour relations related issues in a respectable and fair manner.
  • Proficiency using food services computer applications and Microsoft Office software as well as the ability to manage important administrative tasks such as inventory, food ordering, scheduling and payroll
  • Must be eligible for membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management.
