Turnaround Planner - Piping

The primary responsibility of this role is to prepare piping scope work packages, ensuring alignment with company expectations, standards, and turnaround best practices.


Responsibilities


Health, Safety & Environment

  • Ensure adherence to all Health and Safety protocols established by the organization
  • Comply with all applicable Occupational Health & Safety legislation for the Province of Alberta and environmental standards
  • Always follow established safe work procedures
  • Immediately report any injury, illness, unsafe acts, or hazardous conditions
  • Ensure appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and worn as required


Strategy / Early Planning Phase

  • Develop Job Plans for assigned scope in accordance with the Job Plan Development Process
  • Utilize Planning Norms databases to provide preliminary labor hour estimates during early budget development


Planning Phase

  • Prepare work packages in accordance with the Turnaround Work Package Development Process
  • Conduct job walkdowns to ensure work packages are complete, accurate, and include all support craft requirements
  • Collaborate with Execution Coordinators, Piping Engineers, and Contractors to review scope from a constructability perspective
  • Participate in Construction Work Package (CWP) reviews to ensure full scope is accurately captured
  • Develop detailed task estimates, including duration and crew size for each activity
  • Review estimated hours with the execution team and obtain approval prior to submitting to scheduling for P6 development
  • Develop Bills of Material (BOM) using standard templates to identify all materials required for the scope of work
  • Work closely with Material Coordinators to ensure correct parts are identified and delivered in a timely manner
  • Identify and document any specialty tools, resources, or equipment required
  • Liaise with Supply Chain Management personnel when addressing technical matters with OEMs and vendors
  • Provide regular progress updates to Planning Supervisors and proactively address challenges to keep planning on track
  • Integrate safety as a core value into all aspects of work package development and piping installation risk assessments
  • Resolve technical issues related to piping installation by preparing and submitting detailed Requests for Information (RFIs)


Execution Phase

  • Support Scope Change Requests (SCRs) during the execution phase
  • Be prepared to work extended hours, including day or night shifts, as required
  • Assume ownership of partially completed work packages from other planners and complete them as needed
  • Assist execution teams during the turnaround as required
  • Collaborate closely with execution teams, schedulers, and document control to ensure timely issuance of SCR work packages to contractors


Post‑Turnaround Phase

  • Contribute to lessons learned sessions, identifying successes and opportunities for improvement
  • Update work packages with information gathered during execution to ensure accurate historical records for future planning


Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in Piping Planning, including at least four (4) years in Turnaround Piping Planning
  • Experience with Turnaround or Shutdown projects is highly desirable
  • Proficiency with CMMS systems (e.g., Maximo or equivalent), SPR, Excel, and Microsoft Office tools
  • Mechanical Engineering diploma/degree, Red Seal trade certificate, or Mechanical Technologist qualification with demonstrated maintenance planning experience
  • Strong understanding of piping systems, including materials, welding, fabrication, and installation
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, isometrics, datasheets, and equipment layouts
  • Strong organizational skills, proactive mindset, effective time management, and excellent communication abilities
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and tight timelines, particularly during execution phases
