Reporting to the Manager of the Quarry Section in the Mineral Lands Division, the Transportation Infrastructure Quarry Geologist (Geologist II) position supports the administration of IET’s Quarry Program through acquisition, maintenance, and administration of quarries to support the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s projects. The position will be responsible for and contribute to: gathering, assessing, and compiling geological information related to quarries in relation to engineering materials used in infrastructure projects; carry out prospecting and research to identify sources of sand, gravel, and rock for quarry exploration, permitting, and leasing; as an Inspector under the Quarry Materials Act, inspect and report on quarry operations to determine compliance with that Act, the Quarry Materials Regulations, and other applicable legislation; support the acquisition and administration of consulting services for the completion of geotechnical and environmental investigations of existing and new quarry sites; support the maintenance of quarry data and databases; provide technical geological advice and services regarding aggregate products and quarry activity; respond to inquiries from internal and external stakeholders related to quarries permitted to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. The position requires extensive use of ArcGIS to maintain spatial data generated from field investigations, evaluate quarry applications in reference to other land tenure and uses, and to prepare maps; maintains quarry application information in digital files and tracking logs. Other duties include contributing to the review of land use proposals and applications received by the department; and other related duties as required.
Screening Criteria
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Geology or Physical Geography (equivalencies will be considered)
- Experience conducting geological or geographical research or exploration field projects.
- Experience using geographical information systems (eg. ArcGIS)
Assessment Criteria
- Knowledge of quarry resources in relation to their engineering properties and usage
- Knowledge of land use issues pertaining to resource developments
- Knowledge of field work and exploration techniques,
- Proficiency with computer software including geographical information systems (eg. ArcGIS)
- Ability to effectively exchange information
- Ability to think critically
- Professionalism

- Willing to accept overtime (occasional)
- Willing to accept day and overnight travel throughout the province (significant)
