Legal Counsel
Alberta Law Reform Institute

Legal Counsel individually and as part of the ALRI team, plan and carry out complex legal research and policy analysis. They also manage reviews of legal issues to create reports and advise the ALRI Board on recommendations to improve the law. This involves elements of problem solving, and communicating with many Albertans and professionals to find implementable solutions to current legal issues.
The Alberta Law Reform Institute (ALRI) is located in the Law Centre at the University of Alberta. Since 1967, our work has been to improve the content of the law, the law-making process, the administration of justice, and access to justice for the benefit of Albertans.
Position and Location
This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA). Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton with the potential for hybrid working arrangements in the future.
In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $103,327 to $142,075. This position has an end date of August 31, 2026 with a strong possibility of extension.
Duties
- Legal research, analysis, and policy development to investigate legal problems and policy options.
- Engage in consultation and communication with the legal profession and the public to further develop policy and recommendations.
- Write project reports that offer recommendations to Albertans, the government and the legal community.
- Develop and ensure project plans are well managed.
- Assist with special projects that promote ALRI work to the broader community of law reform agencies.
Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree and the degree of LL.B or JD are minimum educational requirements.
- Demonstration of professional skill in legal research, analysis, and writing at the academic level through an advanced degree in law or equivalent research experience.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of the law and legislative process of Alberta.
- Maintain the professional and educational requirements for membership in the Law Society of Alberta or equivalent, and to reflect the ethical standards of the profession.
- Successful project management experience and problem solving experience are assets to managing law reform projects.
