ISL is a multi-discipline engineering consultancy that includes a dedicated team who works in municipal infrastructure planning. Just the right size, ISL delivers on complex projects while being small enough to maintain strong, cohesive project teams and personal client attention and service.
ISL’s Calgary’s Municipal Infrastructure Planning Team is part of the larger Water and Environment Team which is made up 32 people that support a variety of infrastructure projects throughout Western Canada. We have expertise in infrastructure planning, stormwater management, pumping stations and reservoirs, linear infrastructure for collection and distribution, and water and wastewater treatment.
In British Columbia, the municipal infrastructure planning team works closely with project managers from all of ISL’s BC offices to deliver the infrastructure planning aspects of municipal projects. When you join the municipal infrastructure planning team in BC you can expect:

A Little About You
Your cover letter must demonstrate:
- What interests you in municipal utility systems
- What previous education / work experience do you have within the municipal field
Your resume should show us:
- Post-secondary degree in Civil Engineering
- E.I.T. designation with registration or eligibility to register with EGBC
- Any education and/or experience in modelling, design with preference to municipal engineering experience/education preferred
- Familiarity with hydraulic modeling software
Bonus points for:
Experience with / exposure to:
- Design/drafting software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, Revit, Plant 3D, Navisworks, Bluebeam, MS Visio
- Design experience, specifically with water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater drainage systems
- Application of BC Municipal Design Standards (such as MMCD)
- Construction or survey companies where you were located on site
- Proposal writing experience
- Experience with InfoWorks ICM, InfoWater Pro, WaterCAD, Mike Urban, PCSWMM, XPSWMM, HEC-RAS, and/or other hydrology/hydraulic modelling software
- Specific experience with stormwater management planning, design, and construction
A Little More About the Role
If you had been working with ISL’s municipal infrastructure planning team in the past two weeks you would / may have:
- Conducted hydrologic and hydraulic modelling of complex urban drainage systems using state-of-the-art software.
- Planned, analyzed, and designed urban hydraulic systems, both new and for rehabilitation purposes.
- Designed water, wastewater, and stormwater systems.
- Estimated costs for municipal upgrade and rehabilitation projects.
- Used a series of hydraulic calculations and worked with other ISLers to pumps for wastewater or stormwater lift stations or booster pumps.
- Prepared engineering reports, documents, and drawings by following standard guidelines and quality procedures for drawings and reports.
- Prepared proposals in response to RFPs.
- Had your work reviewed and be provided with coaching on it by other ISLers.
- Reviewed the project deliverable of another ISLer to provide new and different perspectives, and to stimulate the asking of additional questions to further your learning.
- Composed and written technical explanations related to the work you undertake (i.e. emails, technical memoranda, reports.)
- Attended team meetings to plan workloads and see where our team focus needs to be for the coming week.
- Created a plan for Professional Accreditation and career development with support from your mentor.

Depending on your experience level, the salary range (based on a 40-hour work week) is:
- $72,000 - $82,000 annually
