uOttawa’s facilities encompass three main sites that are comprised of over 600,000 square meters of building space (over 6.4 million square feet), 42.5 hectares of grounds, 125 buildings and 4,500 beds in 11 residences. There are over 150 employees in Facilities, including Project Managers, Energy and Commissioning Specialists, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Architects, and space Planners. The facilities capital and operating expenditures are in the range of $100M for the University’s $2.0 billion assets under management. The 20-year Capital spending plan envisions $4.0 billion of new investment highlighted by uOttawa launch of project Top Shelf, a $300 million capital investment to build a new facility for the Faculty of Health Sciences at uOttawa’s River Campus, as well as a tower at the Roger Guidon campus to house uOttawa’s new Advanced Medical Research Center (AMRC).


Position purpose:

Reporting to the manager, conducts daily inspections of all residence areas to ensure a functional, comfortable and secure environment for all occupants. Identifies new maintenance and repair requirements, analyses work methods, and proposes ways of improving the efficacy and quality of inspections and maintenance (particularly in terms of sanitary maintenance) of the area. Completes all administrative documentation required to follow up on cases.


In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Inspects all areas of the residence to spot deficiencies, safety risks and elements that do not comply with residence contracts, and ensures that corrective measures are implemented according to set quality criteria.
  • Gathers data on pre-established performance and compliance indicators, takes notes and photos to investigate and conduct well-substantiated analyses, and produces daily inspection reports.
  • Uses the service’s software to prepare inspection notices and sends them to residents and to the sectors concerned.
  • Communicates the results of inspections to students and to all the services concerned so that follow-up is performed as needed. Conducts additional inspections and prepares cost reports to submit to their supervisor for approval.
  • Responds to the needs of clients (residents and all residence services) and provides on-site support to the Facilities team.
  • Uses digital information management systems and software to generate reports, measure the state of housekeeping and damages, and send and follow up on work orders, among other tasks.


What you will bring:

  • High school diploma combined with three-to-five years’ experience in the field of residential inspections, or an equivalent combination of knowledge and professional experience.
  • Ability to work well in a team, solve problems quickly, and perform several tasks simultaneously and manage various priorities.
  • Organizational skills and initiative.
  • Mastery of a Microsoft Windows environment (Word, Excel, Teams) and electronic communications tools. Experience in using Archibus or another integrated work order management system is an asset.
  • Good critical thinking skills, and ability to perform analyses and issue recommendations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Great attention to detail
  • Self-reliance and good judgment.
  • Bilingualism – French and English (spoken and written)
  • Availability to work nights, weekends and during busy periods when necessary.
  • Driver’s licence that is valid in Ontario.
