The Fort McMurray Catholic School Division is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Payroll Specialist to join our team on a full-time basis. This role is critical to ensuring the timely and accurate processing of payroll for approximately 700 employees. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining compliance with collective agreements and all applicable statutory regulations while delivering high-quality payroll services.

The Fort McMurray Catholic School Division is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Payroll Specialist to join our team on a full-time basis. This role is critical to ensuring the timely and accurate processing of payroll for approximately 700 employees. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining compliance with collective agreements and all applicable statutory regulations while delivering high-quality payroll services.
Requirements And Competencies
- Diploma in Payroll Administration, Business Administration, Accounting, or related field; Payroll Administrator Certificate an asset.
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification from the Canadian Payroll Association is preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of progressive experience in full cycle payroll administration.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and payroll/information management systems.
- Strong knowledge of federal and provincial legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, Canada Revenue Agency, Employment Insurance and other payroll related regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret collective agreements and apply related payroll regulations.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities, particularly under pressure during peak periods.
- High level of professional discretion, with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
- Proven decision-making skills using initiative, judgment, and resourcefulness.
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic and deadline-driven environment.
- A clean criminal record check is required.
Reporting to the Secretary-Treasurer, the Payroll Specialist performs a range of duties to support the Division’s payroll operations, including:
- Preparing and processing bi-weekly and/or monthly payrolls.
- Ensuring accurate calculation and remittance of all statutory deductions and payments to the CRA and other agencies.
- Maintaining confidential payroll and personnel records.
- Assisting with the administration of Group Benefit Plans, LAPP, and Alberta Teachers' Retirement Fund.
- Supporting HR with onboarding, changes, terminations, and interpretation of collective agreements and contracts.
- Preparing and submitting Records of Employment (ROEs) and responding to Service Canada inquiries.
- Reconciling payroll, benefits, and pension accounts and statements.
- Assisting with the preparation of T4s, the annual LAPP report, and external audits.
- Providing confidential administrative support to the Secretary-Treasurer and the Finance Department.
