As a Planning Engineer, you will provide engineering technical support related to all three utilities (Water, Sanitary and Storm) and project management skills by participating in policy, planning and design projects. Your efforts will contribute to a broad variety of planning activities that will include preparation of technical documents (technical memos, reports, stage gates, handovers, technical memos, briefing notes, policy documents and content for updated standards/guidelines) and project management (develop terms of reference, review and manage consultant scope and budget, interpret and present findings, complete Corporate Project Management Framework requirements, and engage with internal and external interested parties).


Primary duties include:

  • Manage and contribute to utility servicing policy, planning, design and delivery projects that support development in greenfield, established, and industrial areas throughout Calgary.
  • Conduct technical analysis and modeling to develop servicing plans
  • Interact with external customers (e.g., consultants, developers, citizens, and regional customers) and internal partners (within the City of Calgary) as a representative of the City and Regional Planning business unit.
  • Manage the execution of planning projects and studies which would include leading and directing consultants on technical scope and outcomes, collaborating with internal, external and regulatory partners, managing contracts, invoicing and the procurement process.
  • Develop engineering recommendations as a result of planning and technical studies to inform Capital Budget Planning and delivery and identify and mitigate service risks.
  • Support the ongoing corporate initiatives such as the Growth Application process, Local Area Plans (LAPs), Established Areas Growth and Change Strategy (EAGCS), Industrial Areas Growth Strategy, Area Structure Plans (ASPs), and UIP's initiatives such as the East Calgary Regional Drainage Study (ECRDS), Fire Flow Strategy, and Storm Manual Update.


Qualifications

  • A degree in Civil or Environmental Systems Engineering.
  • You must have at least 4 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work Click here for more details.
  • A strong technical background in hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater, sanitary or water modelling. Broad experience in the design and construction water resources infrastructure for various stages of project delivery will be considered an asset.
  • Previous project management and utilities infrastructure planning, detailed design and construction experience will be considered an asset.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, a commitment to meeting firm deadlines, and the ability to work effectively with others within a multidisciplinary team.
