Responsibilities

Job Description:

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties:

Job Purpose

The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.

Hours

Monday (6 am-2:30 pm)

Friday and Saturday (10 am-6:30 pm)

Characteristic Job Duties

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:

  • Works with Food Services Coordinator and follows the meal plan and recipes laid out for food preparation.
  • Prepares meals; may prepare for special dietary needs of the residents.
  • Adapts work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services.
  • Makes good use of and decides on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste.
  • Follows guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitors practices to ensure adherence.
  • May supervises students, volunteers and/or guests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • The successful job applicant will have completed High School, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months and/or Cooks papers (1 yr. course)
  • One to three years of prior related experience, with at least one year of institutional cooking experience.
  • Food Safe Certification up to date
  • First aid Certificate
  • WHIMIS
  • Ability to lift more than 20 lbs.

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal Precautions
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis

Work Conditions

The incumbent works in generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:

  • Dealing with angry people
  • Verbal abuse
  • Hot/Steamy environment
  • Noisy
  • Crowded in some cases
  • Pressure of timelines
  • Multi-tasking

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illness due to:

  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Moving objects
  • Injury from lifting
  • Falling on wet/slippery floors

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $22.69 to $22.94 with a maximum of $23.19.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
