Duties

  • Collect waste, including recyclable/sorting, throughout the facility and transport to designated area for disposal.
  • Operate trash and cardboard compactors, package wastes for appropriate disposal.
  • Maintain waste management department in a clean orderly manner at all times. This may include washing the walls, ceilings and scrubbing floors.
  • Complete records, forms and reports as required by the guidelines.
  • Empty the waste containers at the outside entrances.
  • Keep the upper and lower area of the dock washed and cleaned.
  • Drive the department owned vehicle to collect outside waste containers and to dispose of battery waste at the cities collection depot.
  • Collect any old equipment, furniture, etc for disposal from the units and departments.
  • Wash the waste containers and the large waste bins on the units when soiled. Wash out the transport cart.
  • Collect glass and battery waste from the dirty utility rooms on the units.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Experience

  • Previous experience within waste handling in a health care setting is an asset.

Ability

  • Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate to perform the duties of the position.
  • Knowledge of and complies with legislation and regulation governing the handling and disposal of bio medical waste.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment in stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.
  • Behaviour consistent with Hospital Mission, Values and Standards of Performance.
