RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).

Position Summary

The Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) is one of the thirteen virtual institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). It is based out of The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre in Montréal (RI-MUHC).

ICRH has a broad mandate and supports strategic research activities that engage research teams from multiple institutions and organizations across Canada to conduct research into causes, mechanisms, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions associated with the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood, blood vessels, critical care and sleep. ICRH has a focus on strengthening Indigenous health research within our mandate and strives for respectful partnerships with Indigenous Peoples. The Institute is also committed to the values and principles of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) across all aspects of its activities. The incumbent, reporting to the Scientific Director and the Associate Director, is a key member of the institute team.

The incumbent is required to work with the Canadian circulatory and respiratory health research community and stakeholders, nationally and internationally, to identify research priorities, develop research funding opportunities, build partnerships, and translate research evidence into practice to improve the health of Canadians. The position plays a key role in carrying out the Institute’s mission, mandate and values and ensuring excellence is upheld in these areas. Performing the duties of this position to the highest standard, will significantly enhance the Institution’s reputation internally and externally, nationally and internationally.

General Duties

Project Planning and Management – 50%

  • Plans, designs, drafts, adapts, reviews funding opportunities aligned with ICRH’s mandate and priorities,
  • Collaborate with ICRH team members and plays a consultative and supportive role in the planning, implementation and evaluation of Institute’s projects, programs and activities (e.g., funding opportunities, workshops, peer review, partnership, consultations), including special projects,
  • Leads assigned projects, programs and activities and oversees project timelines and deliverables to ensure projects are completed on time and within scope.

Science Strategy - 30%

  • With the Scientific Director, the Associate Director, the ICRH team and the Institute Advisory Board, identifies research priorities, needs, opportunities, gaps, and challenges within the Canadian research ecosystem,
  • Provides scientific expertise and stays up to date on the latest scientific development to integrate innovative research findings into ICRH priorities, funding opportunities, knowledge translation activities and Institute’s programs,
  • Reviews scientific publications, summaries and documents to assess relevancy to the Institute’s mandate,
  • Summarizes and synthesizes pertinent information for strategic consideration by the Institute on an ongoing basis,
  • Participates on working groups struck by Federal Health Portfolio, and other jurisdictional stakeholders seeking the Institute’s expertise,
  • Conducts analysis to assess the impact of funded research, initiatives and activities including developing and implementing appropriate methods and tools to gather researcher input and data,
  • Leads knowledge mobilization activities bringing together researchers across Canada to enhance team science and translate end-of-grant knowledge into impact.

Liaison, Communication and Partnerships – 20%

  • Acts as a spokesperson for the Institute with communities, public, partners and media,
  • Establishes, develops and maintains partnerships with different stakeholders (local, national and international),
  • Prepares and reviews internal and external communication materials, including comprehensive environmental scans, briefing notes for senior-level leadership, business cases, reports and slide presentations as required,
  • Develops and delivers ICRH scientific presentations (at the provincial, national and international level),
  • Represents the Institute at regular CIHR working group meetings.

Education / Experience

Education: Doctorate Degree

Field of Study: Related to ICRH mandate (heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood, blood vessels, critical care and sleep)

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years of advanced training in a research/clinical/health related discipline is essential
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a leadership role and/or manager role is desirable

Required Skills

  • Excellent French and English, spoken and written,
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Ability to work independently or with teams with minimum supervision,
  • A sound understanding of Canadian funding organizations and CIHR structures and operations is an asset
  • Knowledge of the Canadian research, innovation and training landscape and its stakeholders relevant to the Institute is an asset,
  • Knowledge of current policy issues and "key players" in circulatory and respiratory research across Canada and internationally is an asset.
  • Solid organizational and management skills,
  • Ability to manage highly confidential information,
  • Ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment according to their relative importance and urgency,
  • Ability to anticipate needs and take action proactively,
  • Attention to detail, accuracy and analytical skills are essential for this role,
  • Occasional availability outside normal working hours, if necessary,
  • Displays diplomacy, good judgment, resourcefulness and flexibility.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Additional information

Status: Temporary, full time (35-hour workweek)

Pay Scale: $62,389.60 - $115,824.80Commensurate with education and experience

Work Shift: Monday to Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm

Work Site: 2155 Guy Street - Minimum of 3 days per week on site (possibility of hybrid work on specific days)
