Would you like to take on a stimulating, high-impact challenge? We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel, Real Estate. Please note that the candidate may be based in one of our 4 offices: Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto or Quebec City.

The role

In this newly created position, you will assist the Director, Legal Affairs, Development and help Alto achieve its corporate mission by providing strategic legal advice on real estate acquisition and project-related matters. Your in-depth expertise will enable you to play an active role in managing legal risks and making key decisions.

The Responsibilities

  • Act as a strategic advisor to a team specializing in real estate acquisitions and to in-house technical experts, to ensure informed decision-making in real estate law matters.
  • Draft, review and negotiate various types of documents, including contracts and other agreements with municipalities, utilities and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee the legal aspects of assigned files and work closely with the private development partner's and Justice Canada's legal advisors to ensure consistency, compliance and alignment with project objectives.
  • Advise internal teams on the project's legal risks and the company's obligations and propose solutions to mitigate them.
  • Leverage your expertise in real estate law to guide teams on complex issues facing the project, while drawing on your experience in stakeholder engagement.
  • Optimize the acquisition process for multiple acquisitions in Quebec and Ontario, ensuring alignment with the overall project timeline.

The Requirements

  • Law degree and member in good standing of the Quebec or Ontario Bar.
  • Minimum 10 years' professional experience in a similar position with a significant real estate law component.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in negotiating and drafting corporate contracts.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and interact effectively with others.
  • Dynamic, resourceful and results oriented.
  • Perseverance, flexibility and efficiency.
  • Fluently bilingual in French and English, both spoken and written (*This requirement is necessary as, in this position, you will be dealing with stakeholders and/or partners who require recurrent oral and written communication in English).
