Job Description

As our new Wildlife Ecologist, you will play an important role on a team whose work is essential to achieving this goal.

We’re looking for ambitious, driven individuals eager to take on real responsibilities and grow their careers in the exciting field of ecology and biodiversity. Working closely with our Canada-wide Ecology and Biodiversity Team, you’ll be at the forefront of exciting projects in a multitude of business sectors. In this role, you will have the opportunity to coordinate and conduct the full scope of field work programs, data management and analysis, and technical report preparation. You’ll also have the chance to collaborate with clients and regulators, taking the lead on technical scopes, proposals, and project management. This role will challenge you to juggle multiple priorities, stay flexible, and maintain a high attention to detail—all while developing your skills and leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Scientific Research and Analysis: Collect and synthesize scientific literature, existing data sets and secondary source material for technical reports, proposals, and meetings
  • Field Program Leadership: Lead the execution of field programs, ensuring accurate data collection and adherence to safety protocols
  • Data Interpretation and Reporting: Analyze and interpret ecological data, and prepare ecological technical reports that inform project decisions
  • Impact Assessment and Mitigation: Identify potential impacts to ecosystems resulting from land use changes, and recommend suitable mitigation to avoid and / or reduce potential impacts
  • Project Management: Assist in the development, management, and maintenance of complex technical projects involving client portfolios, schedules, budgets, and technical deliverables
  • Team Leadership and Mentorship: Provide effective leadership, support, and training to junior staff
  • Technical Support and Collaboration: Offer technical expertise to SLR’s senior Ecologists and other technical disciplines within SLR
  • Engagement: Build and maintain good working relationships with subconsultants and contractors
  • Professional Development: Receive mentorship in areas of business development and technical areas that interest you

Qualifications


  • 5+ years experience as an Ecologist/Biologist in the environmental consulting industry, with a specialization in birds and/or bats considered an asset.
  • Degree (B.Sc.), in Biology, Ecology or Natural Sciences (M.Sc. is considered an asset)
  • Hands-on experience with wildlife identification (by sight, sound, and sign), equipment deployment, and knowledge of eastern Canada’s wildlife habitats and natural history. Comfortable working in the field, including remote locations (a valid driver’s license is a must). In-depth knowledge and experience with the scientific study, design, and implementation of field protocols.
  • Experience in database management, statistical data analysis, and interpretation
  • Excellent research and report-writing skills.
  • Familiarity with navigating permitting and authorization processes related to Canadian federal, provincial, and regional regulations. Proven ability in project management, including tracking budgets and maintaining clear communication with clients. Strong field coordination and time management skills to plan, schedule, and meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate with senior level staff, other technical teams and clients.
