The Role
Responsibilities
For the 2026 Municipal Election, the deputy returning officer reports to the site supervisor and is responsible for issuing ballots to voters and assisting voters in making amendments to the voters’ list. Three to four deputy returning officers are assigned to each voting place on advance voting days and voting day. Potential hours of work are as follows:
Friday, October 16 from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, October 17 from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Monday, October 26 from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Successful candidates may be hired to work a maximum of two of the above dates. Those applying may also be assigned to work at a special voting place in a long-term care or retirement home; these operate on Voting Day, Monday October 26, 2026.
Deputy returning officers must attend a one-hour training session between September 28 and October 14, 2026. A handbook will be provided at the training that summarizes deputy returning officer duties and the procedures to be followed before and during voting day.

What You'll Do...
Striking voters off the voters’ list after confirming voter identity
Assisting voters in making amendments to the voters list
Counting and recording the number of ballots received from the site supervisor
Providing impartial instructions to voters on how to mark their ballot
Assisting in the set up and tear down of the voting place
Other duties as assigned
To qualify, you'll need...
Strong computer skills, including excellent keyboarding skills
Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain high level of accuracy and attention to detail
High school preferred
Previous Municipal Election Experience Preferred
Additional spoken languages considered an asset
