The Software Engineer 3 applies the principles of software engineering to design, develop, test, and maintain our OSI software products. The Software Engineer has the primary responsibility to provide a successful implementation of the assigned software modules. The Software Engineer will collaborate with a team of multidisciplinary engineers and stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of our software products to our end users and customers. Our Engineers have a focus on collaboration, and assist their team with devising innovative technical solutions and removing roadblocks. As a group, the engineers work together to complete software development activities through the full software lifecycle. To do this the Software Engineer must demonstrate strong communication skills and interpersonal skills. The OSI Software Engineer exhibits professionalism, integrity, and ownership.

What will you do?

• Follows OSI’s SDLC, documented processes, training, coding standards, software engineering best practices, ISO-9001-compliant development guidelines, and workplace operating, environmental, health and safety procedures.
• Develops high-quality C/C++ source code, maintains all development in version control, participates in peer reviews, and corrects defects, system problem reports, and customer tickets.
• Prepares software specifications, manages requirements for new features, produces and updates detailed designs, estimates work, supports technical work breakdown, and helps define scope.
• Identifies, analyzes, and resolves diverse technical challenges; demonstrates ownership by removing roadblocks, communicating deadlines and technical risks, and committing to project objectives, schedules, and budgets.
• Produces technical documentation, reviews project documentation and Technical Publications materials, and provides subject matter expertise to multidisciplinary and sales teams.
• May support concept-phase activities, prototypes, use cases, Test Team activities, test procedures, lab setup, deployment, and customer support at sites or ships.
• May act as Technical Lead by delegating and tracking work, supporting team morale, removing team roadblocks, and reporting team status to the Project Manager.
• Provides technical guidance, mentoring, onboarding, and buddy-program support for new staff.
• Interfaces professionally with customers, prioritizes customer requests, and supports usability, safety, and security issue resolution.
• Recommends improvements to software development guidelines, tools, and standards, and assists with creating and rolling out process improvements.
  
  

What will you bring?

• Education: Degree in Computer Science, Software, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics or Mathematics.
• Experience: 4-6 years’ experience in a software environment; experience in developing real-time interfaces to external systems; experience working in an ISO 9001 compliant software engineering environment would be an asset; experience in the defense or aerospace domains is an asset
• Technical Skills: Experience in C/C++ development under Windows in areas such as 2D/3D graphics, Open GL, TCP/IP, GPS, UDP Multicast, and real-time systems are highly desirable; ability to understand and work with complex software requirement specifications; strong theoretical and algorithmic background with experience in mathematical and/or geospatial applications; ability to assist with analysis and design of solutions for algorithmically complex requirements;
• Soft Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Uses strong communication skills to ask questions, provide technical solutions and help build a strong team environment; Ability to learn quickly and work well under pressure in a high paced, challenging environment; strong team work skills; takes full ownership of any mistakes that are made and corrects the situation.
• Other: Required to obtain security clearance; occasional travel; knowledge of marine navigation concepts and systems is an asset
