ABOUT THE ROLE
POSITION PURPOSE
Reporting to the Shift Supervisor, Transit Enforcement, is responsible for conducting proof of payment inspections and the enforcement of the Region’s by-laws applicable to transit on all York Region Transit (YRT/Viva) and affiliated properties; as well as providing front line customer service assistance with information on directions, routes, fares, policies and transit equipment use and also providing first aid assistance when required; as needed, assisting with security protection to all YRT/Viva patrons, equipment, and properties.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
- Carries out proof of payment and revenue protection inspections as assigned ensuring compliance of fare use through enforcement and education.
- Provides consistent and non-discriminatory enforcement of the York Region and applicable local Municipal by-laws applicable to transit, on York Region Transit and affiliated properties.
- Provides first level emergency response assistance at York Region Transit and affiliated properties through first aid and assistance to passengers, employees and contracted staff.
- Conducts patrols of all York Region Transit premises and equipment, protects site or evidence, obtains statements from witnesses, and provides first aid and/or assistance to passengers, employees, and emergency services as required.
- Provides excellent customer service through assisting passengers and patrons with fare use education, directions, fare payment concerns, and other general transit information.
- Provides information to customers by using the Language Line service.
- Maintains detailed and accurate notes book daily for logging incidents, duties performed, and information of a confidential nature in chronological order.
- Input accurate daily log information into central information system.
- Performs other duties as assigned to meet Branch and Departmental objectives.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Successful completion of a Community College program in Law Enforcement or related program or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience involving loss prevention, municipal law enforcement, security or customer facing experience.
- Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices.
- Satisfactory Police Criminal Background Check.
- Valid First Aid, CPR level C, and AED certificates.
- Valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license and free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
- Ability to demonstrate the Region’s core competencies.
- Computer literacy in MS Office software applications.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of complaint, conflict resolution/management and de-escalation skills.
- Ability to interpret the Region’s By-laws applicable to transit.
- Ability to successfully complete the Basic Fare Inspector Training within six (6) months of employment.
- Ability to exercise good judgement and work effectively in a team environment.
- Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and handle stressful situations, maintaining composure, and providing customer assistance.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgement and discretion in dealing with the public.
- Ability to physically withstand long periods of standing, walking, occasional climbing, and work in all/extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to wear issued equipment, including body armour, duty belt, and other supplied equipment.
- Ability to work shifts, including rotating days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
