About This Team

The Performance Measurement Reporting – Coding team at Sinai Health is essential in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of healthcare data that directly impacts patient care. Our team of coding specialists collaborates to provide precise coding, quality assurance, and reporting across various clinical settings, including inpatient, day surgery, and emergency services. Acting as a bridge between clinical understanding and CIHI data, we ensure that clinical information is accurately represented for patient care, reporting and funding purposes. With a strong focus on mentorship, experienced coders support new team members in developing their skills, fostering a culture of continuous learning. By upholding high standards in coding and reporting to CIHI and the Ministry of Health we contribute to the overall improvement of healthcare delivery and outcomes.

In This Role You Will

  • Apply ICD-10/CCI coding standards to high-acuity patient population
  • Audit accuracy and completeness of data, including but not limited to compliance with coding standards both internal and external and reconciliation between data sources
  • Facilitate the use of abstracted and coded data as it relates to CIHI and Ministry of Health datasets
  • Support mandatory external data submission including, but not limited to CIHI
  • Support monthly inpatient and day surgery team assignment process
  • Prepare and distribute reports, while providing expertise to key internal stakeholders on documentation, coding, and casemix
  • Support Abstracting software system testing
  • Actively support and contribute to the Data Quality and Knowledge Management Framework methodologies, best practices, continuous quality improvement (CQI) and process improvement initiatives
  • Participate in the evolution of the Edit Management Tool (EMT) and/or coding assisted tool in Winrecs supporting Quality Assurance of data holding
  • Protect privacy and maintain the confidentiality and security of all information related to patients, staff and the business
  • Maintain annual and in-year education requirements supporting updates to coding standards and updates to information technology
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required

Job Requirements

Mandatory

  • Graduate from a recognized diploma program in Health Information Management/Health Record Administration
  • Certification with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) and current active member of CHIMA in good standing
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience in an acute care teaching hospital
  • Applicants with proven equivalent recent and related training and experience may also be considered

Preferred

  • Undergraduate University degree in Health Sciences, or other related studies an asset
  • Proficiency in report writing an asset (i.e. Crystal report Power BI, SAS)

Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated competency in ICD-10/CCI coding of Inpatient, Day Surgery, Emergency Records and Ambulatory Clinic visits in Coding/Abstracting system
  • Microsoft Office such as Excel and Access
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of national and provincial casemix methodologies
  • Adaptable to an ever changing environment especially as it relates to the migration of the paper medical record to the electronic medical record
  • Must be well organized and able to demonstrate high productivity and accuracy with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated proficiency in communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
