ISL’s Environment Management Team provides expert environmental assessment, project permitting, construction monitoring and support for a wide variety of municipal, transportation, structural and land development projects within our local communities. A Little About You

Your cover letter must demonstrate:

Your resume should show us:

  • A Dipl. Tech., B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in environmental science, biology, or a related field with a keen interest in pursuing a career in the field. 
  • Zero to three years of experience, with a focus on environmental sciences or related fields. New graduates are encouraged to apply!
  • Eligibility for in-training registration with the College of Applied Biologists.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License is required.  


Bonus points for:

  • Experience in ESC, construction monitoring, or environmental consulting.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Obtained electrofishing operator certification.
  • Completed amphibian salvage courses or workshops.  
  • Familiarity with mapping and data collection tools such as ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, Survey 123, or Avenza Pro. 

 


A Little More About the Role 


Responsibilities: 

Working out of our Langley office as part of a multi-disciplinary team of professional biologists, archeologists, hydrogeologists, and engineers, the applicant will utilize their knowledge and experience to deliver a variety of services for our public and private sector clients. Our ideal candidate is open to learning, adaptable, and will embody kindness, respect, and a collaborative spirit as you serve as an ambassador for ISL during fieldwork, maintaining a high standard of professionalism when interacting with clients, contractors, and the public. 


The successful candidate will hold a valid driver’s license, as occasional out of town travel will be required. Travel can be for up to 10 days at a time and could include remote locations. The nature of the position may, from time-to-time, require weekend work and work with variable hours. 


A typical work week could include: 

  • Working independently or under the guidance of senior biologists on a variety of environmental field assessments, preparing high quality field documentation, and conducting data analysis. 
  • Conducting on-site construction monitoring, including Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) inspections, to verify and document compliance with the scope of work, environmental legislation and permits. 
  • Interacting effectively and professionally with client representatives, contractors, members of the public, co-workers and industry peers, and provide them with excellent service and timely responses. 
  • Learning the regulatory context under which projects are permitted in BC and Canada including the provincial Water Sustainability Act, Environmental Management Act, Weed Control Act, and Wildlife Act, as well as the federal Fisheries Act, Migratory Bird Convention Act, and Species at Risk Act. 
  • Assisting in the preparation of supplemental reports, mitigation strategies, and regulatory applications.
  • Participating in aquatic, terrestrial and/or vegetation field investigations, bird nest surveys, fish salvages and inventories, and amphibian salvages following approved work scopes and to established standards.
  • Travelling as required for field programs (Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan) and working outdoors in a variety of weather and environmental conditions. Fieldwork associated with this position can be rigorous and physically demanding and may involve work in steep terrain in wilderness settings, and associated hazards.
  • Conducting equipment inventory and maintenance including scheduling service appointments, calibration, and ordering stock.
  • Completing registration as a Registered Biology Technologist (RBTech), Registered Biologist in Training (BIT), or Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the College of Applied Biologists and making timely progress through your career toward attaining your professional designation, with ISL’s support.

Depending on your experience level, the salary range (based on a 40-hour work week) is:  

  • $50,000 - $75,000 annually.
